Two Australian dental groups run the same underlying system. One can attribute every booking to the campaign that produced it. The other cannot see bookings at all. Nothing about the software explains the difference.
Pacific Smiles runs Dental4Windows, the market leading Australian dental system, and books patients through booking.pacificsmilesdental.com.au. That is their own subdomain, carrying the same tag manager container as their main site. Because it shares a registrable domain with the parent, the visitor's session survives the transition, the click identifier persists, and the conversion fires on their own property.
A single practice running the same software but booking through a vendor hosted page sends the patient to a different registrable domain, and everything above stops being true. The software is identical. The measurement outcome is completely different, and the difference was decided by whoever set up the booking button.
Watch the address bar. If the domain changes to something other than your own, that is where the attribution ends. This alone answers most of the question.
If the confirmation appears on the vendor's domain, there is no page of yours on which a conversion can fire, regardless of how the tags are configured.
View source on the booking page and search for your tag manager container. On several Australian dental booking layers it is not there, and cannot be added.
Own domain or own subdomain means a full click identifier chain is available. A third party domain means enhanced conversions on hashed patient details, which works but is less precise. Knowing which you are in advance prevents paying for work that cannot be delivered.
The most sophisticated dental marketing page in Australia lists Cliniko among dental practice management systems. Cliniko does not name dentistry among the disciplines it serves, and the major Australian booking directories classify it as allied health. Automed is similarly listed in places as dental, when its documented integrations are medical systems.
This matters because software recommendations are how a practice ends up locked into a stack that cannot report on its own advertising. We would rather point at the two Australian systems with genuinely usable documentation, which are Centaur's Dental4Web and Core Practice, and say plainly that Praktika has no public API we could find.
