The word massage buys you an auction full of day spas.

We looked at 407 Australian city massage venues. Fewer than 5 per cent carry remedial or myotherapy in the business name, 29 per cent are spas or beauty salons, and among priced clinics 57 per cent also sell facials, waxing, lashes or nails. Bidding on massage buys somebody else's market.

Start with the negatives

In most verticals negatives are housekeeping. Here they are the strategy.

Our analysis of Australian city massage listings found the auction is dominated by businesses selling something adjacent to what a remedial clinic sells. Twenty nine per cent were spa or beauty businesses, twenty per cent were Thai or other modality-led operators, and of the clinics we could price, only twenty six per cent offered remedial massage at all while thirty nine per cent sold couples or pamper packages.

There is a second and more sensitive problem. The word massage attracts adult service queries, and Google has its own policy prohibiting the advertising of cuddling, intimate massage or similar services. A clinic on broad match will receive that traffic, pay for it, and gain nothing from it.

So in this vertical the negative keyword list is built before the campaign, not after the first month's search terms report. It is the highest return work available and no competitor page we found has written it.

Where the money should go

Two ways to spend the same budget.

What burns it

  • Massage, unqualified. Bought against day spas at a different price point.
  • Massage near me, broad match. Collects adult queries and beauty intent.
  • Relaxation and pamper terms. Real demand, wrong business, no rebate claim.
  • Fund brand terms without checking your provider agreement first.

What converts

  • Remedial massage, and myotherapy in Melbourne specifically.
  • The complaint: lower back pain, neck and shoulder tension, sciatica.
  • Health fund and HICAPS terms, where you actually hold provider status.
  • Gift vouchers, seasonally, which is a real revenue line most clinics negative out.
The calendar

Three demand events other clinics do not have.

The December extras deadline
Most funds reset annual limits on 1 January, though not all, and one major fund that is owned by another major fund runs on the financial year instead. Around 86 per cent of Australians do not use all their extras. The deadline is the date of service, not the date of claim, so the copy must say book by 31 December.
Gift voucher season
Christmas, Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May, and Father's Day on the first Sunday in September, which is not the American or British date. This is a genuine revenue line and the main competitor page in this category treats voucher as a negative keyword, discarding it entirely.
January, when limits reset
Fresh benefits, and competitors who spent their budget in December. It is usually the cheapest month of the year to buy a new client in this category.
Check your fund provider agreement before bidding on fund names
We read one major fund's ancillary provider terms. They prohibit bidding on, buying or acquiring keywords constituting or incorporating that fund's name or trade marks without prior written approval, and go further, requiring the provider to ensure their advertisements do not appear in response to searches containing those trade marks, specifically naming negative exact matches as the mechanism. A clinic running broad match on a phrase like that fund's name plus massage near me is in breach of its own provider contract. We checked another major fund's terms and found no equivalent clause, so this varies and has to be read rather than assumed.

Questions clinic owners actually ask

What does a massage clinic click cost in Australia?
Nobody publishes it. The most comprehensive Australian healthcare benchmark set covers 22 clinical niches and massage, remedial massage and myotherapy are absent from all of them. For context, the same source puts physiotherapy at $6.03, osteopathy at $6.49 and chiropractic at $8.11 in Australian dollars. The only massage-specific comparison that exists anywhere is United States data from 2020 and 2021, which put massage therapy at roughly a third of the cost per click of chiropractic. Massage was dropped from that publisher's later editions, which is why those stale numbers still circulate.
Should a remedial massage clinic bid on the word massage?
Not on its own, and not on broad match. Our analysis of Australian city listings found fewer than five per cent of massage venues carry remedial or myotherapy in their business name, while 29 per cent are spa or beauty businesses and 57 per cent of priced clinics also sell facials, waxing, lashes or nails. So the bare term buys an auction owned by businesses at a different price point selling a different service. Add the adult query problem and it becomes an expensive way to buy traffic that will not book a remedial appointment.
Are gift vouchers worth advertising for a massage clinic?
Yes, and the leading page in this category treats voucher as a negative keyword and throws the revenue away. Australian gift buying is substantial around Christmas, Mother's Day and Father's Day, with vouchers a meaningful share of it. The nuance to build the campaign around is that a service paid for with a gift card is not eligible for a health fund rebate, because the payer did not receive the treatment. Some clinics handle this well by processing the fund claim first and applying the voucher to the remainder. Note also that gift cards sold in Australia must be redeemable for at least three years.
Does Google restrict massage advertising?
It restricts a specific adjacent category rather than massage itself. Google's dating and companionship policy prohibits advertising cuddling, intimate massage or similar services, which is not a constraint a physiotherapist or podiatrist ever encounters. The practical effect is not that legitimate remedial massage advertising is blocked, it is that the keyword space is polluted, and that both your negative keyword list and your ad copy need to signal clinical intent clearly enough that the wrong audience does not click.
