Remedial Massage · conversion tracking

98 per cent of Australian massage venues cannot be booked online.

We scraped 2,222 Australian massage venues. Forty two of them offered instant online booking. The industry narrative is that massage is an online booking category. The data says it is a phone category, and that changes what you measure.

What we actually measured

The Book Now button is mostly a phone number.

We collected 2,222 Australian massage venue listings across eight markets. Forty two of them, or 1.9 per cent, could be booked instantly. The remaining 98.1 per cent were call to book. That varied by city, from 4.8 per cent in Melbourne down to zero in Geelong and Newcastle.

A caveat we want to state clearly, because it matters: this measures integration with one booking platform, not whether a clinic has booking on its own website. Melbourne, that platform's home market, scored highest, which supports reading it as platform penetration rather than pure industry behaviour.

Even with that caveat, it is strong evidence that call tracking matters far more in massage than the industry's online booking narrative suggests, and that an account measuring only form fills is measuring a minority of its own conversions.

What to do about it

Measuring a phone-led massage business.

  1. 01

Track calls properly before anything else

Unique first time callers over about 60 seconds. Not every ring, not repeat clients rebooking, not hang ups. In a category where 98 per cent of listings are call to book, this is not a supplementary metric, it is the primary one.

  2. 02

Decide which side of the software trade you are on

The systems that give you a booking button on your Google Business Profile are beauty industry platforms with no clinical notes and no HICAPS integration. The systems with HICAPS integration do not document Reserve with Google. That trade is unique to massage, because physio and chiro are locked into the clinical side by Medicare and HICAPS requirements.

  3. 03

Do not embed the booking widget without checking

One major clinical platform documents that referral data does not pass from the parent page into its embedded booking iframe, and that custom tracking code is blacklisted inside it. Its own recommendation is to redirect to the hosted domain where accurate conversion tracking is essential. The standard advice to embed the widget so clients do not leave your site is exactly the advice that destroys the data.

  4. 04

Attach value by service length, not by visit

A 30 minute service at $56 and a 90 minute service at $139 are different outcomes. Where the platform allows a value to be passed, use it, because otherwise the bidding will optimise towards whichever is cheapest to acquire.

The claiming and tracking trade nobody else names
HICAPS publishes a directory of integrated practice management systems. Of the platforms Australian massage clinics actually use, only two appear on it. The beauty and salon platforms, which are the ones with Reserve with Google support and the strongest booking flows, are absent. So a massage clinic effectively chooses between on the spot health fund claiming and a Google Business Profile booking button. Physiotherapy and chiropractic never face that choice, because their Medicare and HICAPS requirements force them onto clinical systems from the start.
Straight answers

Questions clinic owners actually ask

Should a massage clinic embed its booking widget or link out to it?
Link out, if accurate tracking matters to you, and that is the vendor's own advice rather than ours. One major clinical platform documents that because of iframe limitations the referral source does not pass from your website into the embedded booking page, that cross domain tracking is not supported inside an iframe, and that it blocks third party code so the custom HTML tag in tag manager is blacklisted. Its recommendation is to redirect to the hosted booking domain where conversion tracking is essential. The widely repeated advice to embed so the client never leaves your site is what breaks the measurement.
What should a massage clinic count as a conversion?
Calls first, and this is unusual advice that the data supports. Our scrape of 2,222 Australian massage venues found only 1.9 per cent offered instant online booking, with the rest being call to book. An account measuring only form submissions and online bookings is therefore blind to most of its own conversions. Count unique first time callers over about 60 seconds as the primary action, add completed online bookings where the platform supports it, and attach a value reflecting service length rather than counting every booking equally.
Can massage practice software send conversions back to Google Ads?
Not natively on any platform we examined. None of the systems Australian massage clinics commonly use documents click identifier capture or a native Google Ads offline conversion import. The clinical platforms have APIs, one with a 200 request per minute limit and custom patient fields that could hold an identifier, though none has webhooks. The beauty platforms are stronger on booking conversion events and weaker on clinical data. Every offline conversion path here is a custom build, and any agency implying otherwise has not checked.
Why do our online bookings show as direct traffic?
Almost always the booking iframe. When the booking form is embedded from another domain, the referral information does not pass into it, so the eventual booking looks like it came from nowhere. One major platform documents this behaviour explicitly. The options are to redirect to the hosted booking domain with cross domain tracking configured deliberately, to build your own booking form against the platform API, or to match conversions on hashed contact details afterwards. Which of those is available depends entirely on which platform you run.
